List three books that have had an impact on you. Why?
If I were to elaborate a canon, it would include the following: short stories by Jorge Luis Borges; the theater works of William Shakespeare; poetry by St. John of the Cross; all of Fyodor Dostoyevsky’s books, each of which profoundly impacted my life; “The Trial” by Franz Kafka; “Moby Dick” by Herman Melville; “The Turn of the Screw” by Henry James; “Lord Jim,” “Linea de Sombra,” and “Almeyer’s Folly” by Joseph Conrad; and, of course, the Bible.
