The First Person, the Dream, and the Promise

“As long as you think, you are not dead.”

Consciousness is the reality nearest to us and, at the same time, one of the hardest to explain. Everything we know appears within it; yet whenever we try to make it an object, something seems to remain behind the act of observation: the subject who observes. This essay begins with that irreducible first person, follows the limits of scientific explanation, and culminates in two dreams in which the self recognizes itself inside a world produced by its own mind and perseveres even when that world goes dark.

The dreams are not treated as private revelations or as proofs of immortality. They are received as philosophical experiences: scenes in which consciousness dramatizes its own structure. Terror, metacognition, death, fraternal relation, a luminous stone, the loss of sensible certainty, and finally the promise of Christ all appear within them.

I. The Fact That Comes Before Every Explanation

Before human beings formulate a theory of consciousness, they are already conscious. Before we ask what the self is, we have already said I; before we investigate the brain, someone already exists for whom the brain, the body, and the world appear. This precedence does not by itself prove that consciousness is a separate substance or that it can subsist apart from the organism. It does, however, establish the point of departure that no explanation should erase: experience never presents itself anonymously. It always happens from somewhere, and that place is not merely a spatial coordinate. It is a first person.

I can look at a table, remember my childhood, feel fear, or attend to my breathing. The contents change, but they share one structure: they are given to me. Even when I am not explicitly repeating, ‘I am Israel Centeno,’ my identity is implicit in the standpoint from which the world is organized. We may call this silent presence the pre-reflective self. It is not yet a description of myself; it is the sheer fact that I am living the experience from within.

Then an even more astonishing capacity appears. I do not merely see, fear, or remember; I can become aware that I am seeing, fearing, or remembering. I can judge my thoughts, ask whether they are true, and recognize that the one examining them now is the same one who, a moment ago, was absorbed in them. This turning of consciousness back upon itself is metacognition. The subject does not merely process information; to some degree, the subject knows that it is processing it.

Consciousness, therefore, is not one more problem added to the end of a scientific account of the universe. It is the condition under which any account can be known. Theories, instruments, and data all appear before it. In the conscious being, the universe becomes something that can be thought from within itself. Matter—if we retain that word provisionally—comes, in us, to question its own origin, its laws, and its destiny.

II. The So-Called Easy Problems and the Hard Problem

Contemporary philosophy often distinguishes, following David Chalmers, between the functional problems of consciousness and the hard problem. The phrase easy problems is deliberately provocative: none of them is actually easy. To explain how the brain integrates the senses, directs attention, stores information, recognizes faces, produces language, makes decisions, or constructs a representation of itself is an immense undertaking. They are difficult in practice, but called easy because we know the kind of answer we are seeking: a mechanism that performs an observable function.

Neuroscience can correlate states of consciousness with neural networks, neurotransmitters, electrical rhythms, and lesions. It can study what changes when a person sleeps, remembers, deliberates, prays, or recognizes his own face. It may eventually describe every neuron, synapse, and chemical exchange involved; it may anticipate a decision or partially reconstruct a perceived image. All of this would explain, with increasing precision, the conditions and operations of mental life.

Yet one question would remain, and it does not look like another item in the same inventory: why are those processes experienced? Why do they not take place in absolute darkness, like machinery with no interior? A third-person description can tell us what a system does, but consciousness introduces the fact that there is something it is like to be that system. Pain is not merely neural transmission and avoidance behavior: it hurts. Red is not merely a discriminated wavelength: it appears in a particular way. Fear is not only physiological activation: someone suffers it.

To say that experience is identical with the cerebral process is a possible philosophical position, but the identity is not explained merely by being asserted. We would still need to show why certain physical processes possess interiority. To say that consciousness is an illusion does not solve the difficulty either, because every illusion is an appearance to someone. We may be mistaken about what we are; it is much harder to deny that the experience of being mistaken exists.

Here the Cartesian cogito retains its force. Descartes did not thereby solve the relation between soul and body, but he uncovered a certainty present even in doubt: if I doubt, the act of doubting is occurring in the first person. I cannot turn that evidence into an external object without once again presupposing the subject who examines it.

III. The Device and the Listener

We can explain every transistor in a radio, every component of a telephone, the digital encoding, the transmission of data through Wi-Fi, and the reconstruction of sound. We can follow the signal from the voice to the speaker. But to explain the transmission of information is not to show that the device has an inner point of view. In a human being, information does not merely circulate: it appears before someone who can understand it, doubt it, and ask what it means.

This comparison does not require a little spectator hidden inside the brain, a homunculus watching a neural screen. That would only postpone the problem, since we would then have to explain who watches inside the watcher. The self need not be imagined as an object concealed among the neurons. It is first of all the living unity from which the organism feels, knows, and acts.

The anthropology of Thomas Aquinas offers an alternative both to crude dualism and to reductionism. The soul is not a ghost accidentally lodged in a bodily machine. It is the form of the living body, the principle by which this body is one being capable of nourishment, sensation, knowledge, and desire. The brain is an organic condition of our present consciousness, but the person is not reducible to the sum of his components, any more than the meaning of a sentence is located in a single letter.

Artificial intelligence sharpens the question. A machine might imitate introspection, report internal states, correct its own processes, and say, ‘I feel.’ Its outward conduct might become indistinguishable from that of a conscious subject. Even then the question would remain: is there something it is like to be that machine, or are the appropriate functional relations merely being executed? Perfect outward performance does not automatically disclose an interior life.

IV. Intelligibility and Its Limits

Science advances because the universe is intelligible. Phenomena exhibit regularities; causes leave traces; mathematics discovers structures that the world appears to obey. The puzzles of the pyramids or the Nazca lines can be reconstructed because vanished cultures left quarries, tools, roads, stakes, geometrical procedures, and intermediate works. Intelligence unravels a secret by following the tracks of its realization.

But the intelligibility of the universe does not imply that a finite mind can exhaust it. Human beings know from within a body, a history, and a limited horizon. Instruments extend the senses; mathematics allows us to conceive dimensions through which we cannot travel; artificial intelligence can multiply memory and the power to connect data. None of these extensions places us outside all space, time, and perspective, where we might contemplate the whole from an absolute standpoint.

We should distinguish what is not yet known, what may be physically inaccessible, and what exceeds the kind of question empirical science is designed to answer. We may not yet know how to cure a disease and nevertheless advance through testable mechanisms until we do. But we may never receive information from beyond the cosmological horizon. And even a complete physical theory would leave other questions open: why is there something rather than nothing? Why these laws? Why does mathematics correspond to the world? Why is there a consciousness capable of understanding either one?

The sentence ‘science will explain it someday’ is not a scientific conclusion. It is a philosophical hope that may be reasonable in certain cases but becomes scientism when applied in advance to every possible reality. Nor is it legitimate to call every temporary gap a miracle. Intellectual honesty must leave room for three possibilities: problems we will solve, permanent limits on access, and mysteries whose object structurally exceeds our power of comprehension.

Christian mystery is neither absurdity nor emptiness. It is a reality that can be known truly without being encompassed. The Trinity, grace, and the Resurrection are not contradictions set against reason; if true, they surpass the natural proportion of a created intelligence. Mystery is not the unintelligible. It is the inexhaustibly intelligible.

V. The Dream as a Laboratory of the First Person

Dreaming makes visible a structure that usually goes unnoticed while we are awake. During sleep, the external world is largely suspended and yet another world appears: spaces, bodies, voices, dangers, and memories. The dreamer may not know that he is dreaming, but the first person does not therefore disappear. There is someone for whom the scene is happening.

In an ordinary dream, the self is absorbed in the represented world. It accepts impossible transformations without submitting them to ordinary judgment. In a lucid dream, another level appears: the dreamer recognizes that this is a dream. Lucidity does not create the subject; it reveals that the subject was already there. Before saying, ‘I am dreaming,’ he was already the one who saw and feared.

Neuroscience can investigate REM sleep, frontoparietal networks, working memory, and the reactivation of metacognition. Researchers have even established limited communication with dreamers through agreed eye signals. Such work can describe the physiological passage into lucidity. It does not yet tell us why a functional change becomes the lived recognition: I am the one who is dreaming.

VI. The Elevator: Terror Is Not Ultimate Reality

In the first of the two dreams, Israel is inside an elevator with other people. The elevator descends and keeps descending without end. The impossible prolongation of the descent creates mounting terror: there is no floor, no stop, no exit. At last the doors open, a vast blaze enters, and someone declares, ‘This is hell.’

Until that moment, the dreamer does not know he is dreaming. Yet he implicitly knows who he is. He does not watch from outside as a character called Israel descends; it is Israel who descends, listens, and feels horror. His identity does not depend on lucidity. It is pre-reflectively present in every experience.

Then the click occurs. He answers, ‘No, this is a dream.’ Consciousness steps back from the world that had wholly contained it. The elevator, the flames, and the fear may not immediately vanish, but they lose their claim to be final reality. The dreamer discovers that he is more than the character subjected to the descent: he is also the one for whom the entire scene is appearing.

This moment is a precise image of metacognition. The mind produces a world, enters it, forgets that it produced it, and then recognizes its representational character without entirely leaving it. Terror says, ‘This is absolute; there is no way out.’ Consciousness replies, ‘This is happening within me, but it does not exhaust what I am.’

A spiritual reading need not turn the dream into prophecy. It is enough to recognize its form. In waking life, fear, guilt, and despair can also present themselves as total interpretations: everything is over; you are condemned; there is no exit. Spiritual lucidity does not deny pain. It denies that pain has authority over the whole of being. The dream culminates in an inner awakening: this is real as an experience, but it is not ultimate reality.

VII. Dreaming Death: As Long as You Think, You Are Not Dead

The second dream carries the experience to a more radical boundary. Israel and his brother are shot. His brother dies first. Israel feels the bullet pass through his chest, feels life withdrawing, and finally feels everything go out. He expects to pass immediately into the Resurrection and to see Christ. Instead, he finds himself in profound darkness.

The dream does not prove what actual death is like. The brain can represent dying with bodily, imaginative, and emotional materials. Its philosophical importance lies in what the experience preserves after the sensible world has vanished. There is no landscape, no visible body, no spatial orientation. Yet Israel remains Israel; his brother remains his brother; the memory that the brother died first remains, and the relation between them subsists.

In the darkness a sentence arises: ‘As long as you think, you are not dead.’ This is not merely the cogito converted into a rule for survival. Israel is not only proving his own existence; he is speaking to his brother. He recognizes another first person whom he cannot see. Consciousness remains relational: I know that I am, and I trust that you continue to be.

The words are repeated like a prayer against nothingness: ‘As long as you think, you are not dead. As long as I think, I am not dead.’ Thought appears not as a cold operation but as the last inward evidence that annihilation has not prevailed. As long as someone can formulate the darkness, the darkness has not completely absorbed him.

VIII. The Luminous Stone

After the first darkness, the brothers appear standing upon a tall, rectangular, three-dimensional stone. The stone is the only thing that gives off light, and for a moment it allows them to see one another. Christ does not appear; the stone appears instead. It is foundation, surface, volume, and sign—the only solid reality within nothingness.

The biblical resonance is unavoidable. Christ is the cornerstone, the spiritual rock, the stone rejected by the builders; at the same time, a stone seals his tomb. Yet the dream preserves an ambiguity. The stone may signify Christ veiled, or it may be the available image of Christ, the final sensible mediation that still makes belief easier because it gives light.

Israel and his brother strike the stone, expecting Jesus to appear once they break it. They strike until it collapses. Yet they do not find Christ inside. They lose the only source of light and return to nothingness, both still conscious that they are alive. This detail prevents an easy interpretation. The stone was not merely an obstacle; it was their last security. To continue, they must lose even that which allowed them to see each other.

The sequence has the form of a purification. First bodily life disappears, then the visible world. A material consolation—the luminous stone—appears and is also taken away. No object, visible ground, or confirmation remains. There are only consciousness, relationship, the spoken word, and a promise not yet fulfilled.

At first, striking the stone resembles a technique: if we perform this action, we will obtain Christ as a result. But Christ is not contained inside a mechanism. When the stone breaks, the procedure fails. The final light is not beaten out of the stone; it comes afterward, when nothing remains to be manipulated. It is not a conquest but a gift.

The experience recalls the dark night of John of the Cross. This does not make the dream a private revelation. It means that both share a grammar: images and consolations are withdrawn so that faith will not confuse God with what it feels about God. While the stone shines, hope has sensible support. Once the stone is gone, the question is whether the promise can survive without visible evidence.

IX. The Light and the Promise

After breaking the stone and returning to the void, Israel continues telling his brother that as long as he thinks, he is not dead. At last the light appears, and with it the promise of Christ. The final response—’You see?’—does not mean that the method worked. It does not say: we broke the stone correctly and manufactured the light. It means: even when we lost the last sign, the promise had not disappeared.

The dreams therefore form a diptych. In the elevator, consciousness declares, ‘This is a dream,’ denying that terror is ultimate reality. In the dream of death, it declares, ‘As long as you think, you are not dead,’ denying that darkness necessarily means annihilation. In the first, the self transcends appearance. In the second, it preserves identity, fraternal relationship, and faith when every appearance has vanished.

The second dream adds something decisive: the self is not saved as an isolated monad. The first act within darkness is to speak to the brother. Personal identity is recognized in communion. Israel knows who he is because he can still say I, but also because he can still say you. The word crosses a darkness in which bodies can no longer see one another.

The Christian promise does not appear as a laboratory explanation. It appears as that which sustains when explanations, images, and supports have ceased. This does not make the dream empirical proof of immortality. It makes it an extraordinarily coherent dramatization of hope: death may extinguish the scene, but it need not possess the final word about the person.

X. Consciousness, Soul, and Transcendence

Do these dreams prove that the soul survives death? Not scientifically. Everything dreamed occurred while the organism was alive. Yet the dreams reveal how consciousness understands itself: as a center of identity not wholly identical with the contents that appear and disappear before it.

Materialism may hold that this unity is a useful construction of the brain. Emergentism may regard it as a novel property of sufficiently complex systems. Panpsychism may propose that some elementary interiority belongs to matter from the beginning. Idealism may reverse the order and treat consciousness as fundamental. Christian anthropology recognizes the person as a bodily and spiritual unity created by God.

No brain image, however detailed, visibly contains the meaning of the sentence ‘I love my brother.’ It may display the neural conditions of its formulation, associated memories, and affective responses. But meaning, truth, and intentional direction are not weighed like molecules. This does not make them unreal. It suggests that reality may possess levels that cannot be reduced without remainder to a single description.

The mind’s openness to truth, goodness, and infinity is especially significant. A finite intelligence can conceive the universal and recognize that no finite object entirely satisfies its desire to know. It does not encompass infinity, but it is oriented toward it. For Aquinas, to know does not necessarily mean to comprehend exhaustively: we may know something true of God without containing God within our concepts.

The greatness of consciousness lies not in imagining itself divine, but in recognizing both its capacity and its limit. It can discover the laws of the cosmos, build artificial intelligence, and examine its own neurons. It can also know that no instrument places it outside all being, able to contemplate the whole as an absolute intelligence would.

XI. Against Scientism—and Against the Shortcut

There are two symmetrical errors. The first says that because we do not yet know the origin of consciousness, God must occupy that gap. This is the so-called God of the gaps, an explanation that retreats whenever science advances. The second says that because science has solved many problems, it will necessarily solve every possible question. That leap is not scientific either; it is a materialist metaphysics presented as prediction.

The question of consciousness is not the search for one missing neuron. Even a perfect functional map would leave open the passage from objective process to subjective experience. Future discoveries may transform the question radically. But we have no right to decree beforehand that the third person will exhaust the first, any more than we may decree that every present difficulty is a miracle.

The most fertile position accepts investigation without idolizing it. Science should study every correlate, mechanism, and alteration of consciousness. Philosophy should examine the ontological assumptions of those explanations. Theology may ask whether interiority, rationality, and openness to infinity find their ultimate ground in a creating Intelligence. No discipline gains by pretending to be the others.

Mystery does not begin wherever our explanatory patience runs out. It begins properly where reality, even while disclosing itself, exceeds the possibility of being exhausted by a finite intelligence. Reason is not destroyed there. It recognizes its proportion and continues to advance without confusing progress with total possession.

XII. The First Person as Threshold

In the end, one fact remains that cannot be placed wholly outside us: I am here. There is not only processing; there is experience. There is not only experience; I know that I have it. I do not merely know it; I can judge it, interpret it, and offer a word to another subject.

In the elevator, this first person discovers that the apparent hell is a dream. In dreamed death, it passes through the disappearance of the world and continues to say I and you. Upon the luminous stone it regains sight for a moment; by destroying the stone, it loses even that security. In the final darkness it possesses no image and no sensible evidence, but it preserves the word. Then a light arrives that it did not produce.

We can map the brain that accompanies each of these scenes. We can study dreaming, memory, fear, identity, and metacognition. We should. But the map will always be known by someone. Science can describe the conditions under which the self appears; it has not yet explained why there is a for whom—why the universe does not merely occur but comes, in us, to be lived and questioned.

Consciousness is therefore an inner frontier. On one side, it belongs to the world: it sleeps, falls ill, changes with the brain, and depends upon the body. On the other, it opens a horizon that no purely exterior description seems able to capture completely: truth, freedom, meaning, communion, and transcendence.

Perhaps we will never possess a theory that closes that horizon. Consciousness may not be a dark object that we will one day illuminate from outside, because consciousness is itself the light under which objects can appear. We can study the lamp, its structure, and its conditions. The question remains: why is there lived light, and someone capable of recognizing himself within it?

The two dreams do not solve the great problem. They embody it. They show the subject lost inside a representation and capable of awakening within it; then stripped of world, visible body, and certainty, yet preserving identity, fraternity, and hope. They leave us with a conclusion that is not a demonstration but a reasoned confession: when the last stone disappears and darkness returns, the person can still speak a word; and when he can no longer manufacture any light for himself, he may receive it as promise.
